She was the daughter of Tanchel Bach, who was born in Russia, and L\u00e9a Blaser, who was born in Poland. Her parents lived in the 11th arrondissement of Paris and were knitters.  <\/p><p><br><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp;Before the war, she was a member of the YASK (Yiddish Arbeiter Sport Klub), one of the many organizations affiliated with the Yiddish-speaking Jewish section of the M.O.I.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p><p>As early as 1941, she joined a group of young people from the 11th arrondissement in distributing leaflets and putting up \u201cflyers\u201d to denounce the Nazi Occupation and the collaborationist Vichy regime. She was 16 years old.<\/p>\n<p>In December 1941, while she was putting up posters titled \u201cLet\u2019s Drive Out the Invader,\u201d she was arrested by the French police and imprisoned at the Petite Roquette prison and then at Fresnes from February 3 to 23, 1942.<\/p><p><br><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp;In the spring of 1943, the crackdown in Paris and the reorganization of the Communist Resistance in the southern zone prompted her to leave for Lyon. Under the pseudonym Diane, she served as a liaison for Jacques Kott of the UJJ (Union of Jewish Youth) and later for Charles Lederman of the UJRE (Union of Jews for the Resistance and Mutual Aid), transporting newspapers, forged documents, and sometimes even weapons and explosives for the combat groups. She traveled throughout the cities of the southern zone\u2014Marseille, Toulouse, Lyon, Grenoble\u2026  <\/p><p><br><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp;On June 6, 1944, while she was in Marseille with Jacques Kott, the D-Day landings took place in Normandy.<\/p>\n<p>Germaine returned to Lyon. To avoid going to a hotel after curfew, she went to her family home in Villeurbanne.  Under police surveillance, she was arrested the next day at her parents\u2019 home along with her father and taken to Gestapo headquarters. There, she was interrogated with extreme brutality and imprisoned at Montluc Prison. <\/p>\n<p>His father was shot on June 12, 1944, along with 22 hostages.<\/p><p><br><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp;After being transferred to the Drancy camp, Germaine was deported on June 30, 1944, to the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp. Not knowing what had become of her father, she searched for him among the deportees and was relieved not to find him\u2026 <\/p>\n<p>There, however, she was reunited with one of her friends from the Yask, Paulette Szlifke (or Sliwka, later Sarcey), and together, on January 18, 1945, they were evacuated from Auschwitz to a satellite camp of Ravensbr\u00fcck, following a horrific <em>\u201c <\/em> death <em>march <\/em>.\u201d<\/p><p><br><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp;On May 3, 1945, they were liberated by the Soviets from the Neustadt-Glewe camp and repatriated to France on May 22, 1945.<\/p><p><br><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp;Upon her return, Germaine learns the circumstances under which her father was shot, and she has a very hard time coming to terms with his execution, for which she holds herself responsible.<\/p><p><br><\/p>\n<p>She took the name Germaine Bach-Isra\u00ebl after the war and died in Paris on January 13, 2012.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1e509f9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1e509f9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>References:<\/strong><\/p><p>\u2014 *Le Maitron* by Chantal Dossin<\/p><p>\u2014 Chantal Dossin, 2018, <em>*They Were Jews and<\/em> <em>Members of the Resistance: Convoy 76<\/em>*.
