The group was dedicated to rescuing Jews, both children and adults.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3d04dd9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3d04dd9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>  Following the mass roundups of foreign Jews in the southern zone, Joseph Bass\u2014known as Monsieur Andr\u00e9, a Jew of Russian origin who had escaped from the Vernet internment camp\u2014joined the group of Resistance fighters at the Mus\u00e9e de l\u2019Homme in Marseille and devoted himself to rescuing Jews.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>The \u201cService Andr\u00e9\u201d (also known as the Action Group Against Deportation or the Andr\u00e9 Network), founded in late 1942, produced false documents and organized the hiding of many Jews. In the early days of the group\u2019s activities, Joseph Bass financed the organization out of his own pocket. The Joint, an American Jewish relief organization, subsequently took over.  <\/p><p> <\/p><p>With the help of Pastor Andr\u00e9 Trocm\u00e9\u2014recognized as \u201cRighteous Among the Nations\u201d in 1971\u2014Joseph Bass set up an escape route to the village of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon. This escape route later extended to Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, Orange, N\u00eemes, Nice, and Cannes. <\/p><p> <\/p><p>Following the roundups at the \u201cVieux Port\u201d in Marseille, the organization\u2019s headquarters were moved to the heart of a working-class neighborhood in Saint-\u00c9tienne, to a caf\u00e9-restaurant that historian L\u00e9on Poliakov would immortalize under the name \u201cL\u2019auberge des musiciens.\u201d<\/p><p>The &#8220;Andr\u00e9 Service&#8221; is also expanding its military operations.<\/p><p>Beginning in June 1943, Mr. Andr\u00e9 established a Jewish Resistance group on the Chambon-sur-Lignon plateau with the help of the Jewish Army, a Resistance organization made up of young Zionists that was very active in the south of France.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>These maquis fighters, along with FFI Resistance fighters, attacked a German column and forced it to surrender.
