The term came into use following the emancipation of the Jews by the Constituent Assembly that emerged from the French Revolution on September 27, 1791. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-02e762f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"02e762f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"popup-summary\">  Historically, the noun \u201cIsraelite\u201d refers to the inhabitants of the Kingdom of Israel, which existed in the Near East before the Common Era. The word appears in monotheistic religious texts. <\/div><div class=\"popup-body\"><p dir=\"ltr\">  In everyday language, however, the word \u201cJew\u201d is used to refer to followers of Judaism who are organized into communities that face discrimination.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">  The French Revolution granted Jews full citizenship and helped facilitate their rapid integration into society.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">  Whether used as a noun or an adjective, in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the term \u201cIsraelite\u201d reemerged to refer to emancipated Jews who were citizens. It was then adopted into everyday vocabulary and by French institutions\u2014both religious and social\u2014such as, for example, the \u201cAlliance Isra\u00e9lite Universelle\u201d or \u201cLes \u00c9claireurs Isra\u00e9lites de France.\u201d The term \u201cIsraelite\u201d was intended to be free of the negative connotations attached to the word \u201cJew\u201d by centuries of prejudice and stigmatization.  <\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">  During World War II, a semantic shift took place with the enactment of genocidal anti-Jewish laws that targeted both \u201cJews\u201d of French origin (the \u201cIsraelites\u201d) and \u201cJews\u201d of foreign origin.
