{"id":18764,"date":"2025-11-07T15:44:13","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T14:44:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.museemrjmoi.com\/1932-the-jewish-section-of-the-m-o-i\/"},"modified":"2026-06-23T10:02:28","modified_gmt":"2026-06-23T08:02:28","slug":"1932-the-jewish-section-of-the-m-o-i","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.museemrjmoi.com\/en\/1932-the-jewish-section-of-the-m-o-i\/","title":{"rendered":"1932: The Jewish Section of the M.O.I."},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-page\" data-elementor-id=\"18764\" class=\"elementor elementor-18764 elementor-12002\" data-elementor-post-type=\"page\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d55621f e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"d55621f\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f9b36cb elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f9b36cb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h1 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Jewish Section of the M.O.I.<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-09cc693 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"09cc693\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">BEFORE THE WAR: A DYNAMIC NETWORK OF NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-efd20e2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"efd20e2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The<\/strong> organization <strong>M.O.I.<\/strong> was founded by the Communist Party in 1932; language groups were created to promote the integration in France of workers who were still not fluent in French.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many Yiddish-speaking Jews who had immigrated from Eastern Europe\u2014driven from their countries by fascism and anti-Semitism\u2014joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museemrjmoi.com\/en\/underground-organizations-that-emerged-from-the-jewish-section-of-the-m-o-i-september-1940-november-1944\/\"><strong>Jewish section of the M.O.I.<\/strong><\/a> ( <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museemrjmoi.com\/en\/yiddish\/\">Yiddish-speaking<\/a>).<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Jewish organizations affiliated with the <strong>Jewish section of the M.O.I.<\/strong> are very active and diverse: social and medical services, political information, sports activities, the women\u2019s movement, the youth movement, community centers, a writers\u2019 group, a community choir, and a theater group.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Yiddish-speaking communists and sympathizers in the Jewish section have a daily Yiddish-language newspaper, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museemrjmoi.com\/en\/naie-presse\/\"><em>Na\u00efe Presse<\/em><\/a> (<em>The New Press<\/em>), which published its first issue in January 1934. This newspaper was widely circulated among the prewar Jewish immigrant community. One of its primary objectives was the fight against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museemrjmoi.com\/en\/musee\/the-jewish-section-of-the-m-o-i\/3-from-the-jewish-section-of-the-m-o-i-to-the-yiddish-language-newspaper-naie-presse\/\">fascism<\/a>.  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fcfc14d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"fcfc14d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">THE JEWISH SECTION DURING THE OCCUPATION: THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE UNDERGROUND MOVEMENT<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0b2c456 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0b2c456\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div><p>From the very beginning of the Occupation, activists from the <strong>Jewish section<\/strong> organized a large-scale neighborhood mutual aid effort.<\/p><\/div><div><p>Very early on, in September 1940, acting outside the law, the leaders of the Jewish section founded the organization<a href=\"https:\/\/www.museemrjmoi.com\/en\/solidarity\/\">\u201cSolidarit\u00e9<\/a>.\u201d Initially an organization dedicated to mutual aid and information, \u201cSolidarit\u00e9\u201d quickly became a Resistance organization. Social action was never separated from political action within the organization.  <\/p><\/div><div><p>The Jewish section of the M.O.I.\u2014which has gone underground\u2014is also very active in disseminating information.<\/p><\/div><div><p><i>Na\u00efe Presse<\/i> reappears clandestinely, at fairly regular intervals, under the title <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museemrjmoi.com\/en\/our-word\/\"><em>Unzer Vort<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>beginning on September 29, 1940.<\/p><\/div><div><p><em>*Unzer Vort*<\/em> and <em>*Notre Voix*<\/em> or<em> *Notre Parole* (the French-language edition) continued <\/em>to be published<em> without interruption <\/em>until the Liberation.<\/p><\/div><div><p>Organizations affiliated with the Jewish section of the M.O.I., such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museemrjmoi.com\/en\/union-of-jewish-communist-youth-ujc-or-jcj\/\">Jewish Communist Youth<\/a> (JCJ) and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.museemrjmoi.com\/en\/union-of-jewish-women-ufj\/\">the Union of Jewish Women<\/a> (UFJ), play a specific role in \u201cSolidarity.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3507266 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3507266\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">THE EARLY ROLE OF THE JEWISH SECTION IN THE RESISTANCE<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b7263cd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b7263cd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As early as 1940 and 1941, Jews who were communist activists took part in armed actions within the groups of the Organisation Sp\u00e9ciale (OS) and the Communist Party\u2019s Youth Battalions.  <\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In April 1942, two Jewish Resistance fighters were killed by an explosive device they were testing. Members of the Jewish section of the M.O.I. were executed. <\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very quickly, in May 1942, highly effective armed groups of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museemrjmoi.com\/en\/ftp-m-o-i-groups\/\">Francs-tireurs and M.O.I. partisans<\/a>began to form in Paris. Many of them came from the Jewish section. Others would follow in the provinces.  <\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all Jewish communists, immigrants from Eastern Europe, and members of the Resistance are affiliated with the Yiddish-speaking Jewish section. Some belong to other language groups within the MO.I., but all are fighting Nazism.  <\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Jewish section\u2019s civil Resistance took many forms: sabotage, graffiti on walls, finding hideouts for the FTP-MOI, finding families to take in hidden children, clandestine printing operations, forging documents, clandestine intelligence gathering, fundraising, and liaison agents&#8230;.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Jewish section of the M.O.I. is, operating underground, on the front lines of the political struggle and the Resistance.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museemrjmoi.com\/en\/mouvement-national-contre-le-racisme-mncr\/\">National Movement contre le Racisme<\/a>(MNCR) was founded in the summer of 1942 at the initiative of the Jewish section of the M.O.I. They carried out joint actions to rescue Jewish children.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>THE NEED FOR UNITY: THE FOUNDING OF <a href=\"https:\/\/ujre.fr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">THE UJRE<\/a><\/strong><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the spring of 1943, the Jewish sections of the Northern and Southern zones merged to form a single organization:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.museemrjmoi.com\/en\/union-of-jews-for-resistance-and-mutual-aid-ujre\/\">the Union of Jews for Resistance and Mutual Aid<\/a> (UJRE). It replaced \u201cSolidarit\u00e9.\u201d <\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, the Jewish section of the M.O.I. founded<a href=\"https:\/\/www.museemrjmoi.com\/en\/union-of-jewish-youth-ujj\/\">the Union of Jewish Youth<\/a> (UJJ).<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the south, combat groups took the name \u201cUJRE <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museemrjmoi.com\/en\/ujre-and-ujj-combat-groups\/\">combat groups<\/a>,\u201d one-tenth of which would join the FTP-M.O.I.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d204028 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d204028\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">DEVASTATION OF THE JEWISH QUARTER\u2026  <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bdba452 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bdba452\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Paris, from March to June 1943, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museemrjmoi.com\/en\/special-brigades\/\">Special Brigades of the General Intelligence Service<\/a> led <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museemrjmoi.com\/en\/the-three-major-spinning-mills\/\">three devastating manhunts<\/a>.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The human, political, and military organization of the Jewish section of the M.O.I. has been devastated.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1944, the unification of Jewish movements\u2014including the UJRE\u2014led to the creation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museemrjmoi.com\/en\/representative-council-of-french-jews-crif\/\">Representative Council of French Jews<\/a> (CRIF).<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jews of all faiths<strong> aspire, <\/strong>above all, to liberation and the restoration of the Republic.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-589cf95 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"589cf95\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">THE JEWISH COMMUNITY AFTER THE WAR. RECONSTRUCTION. MEMORY AND HISTORY  <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0c09b55 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0c09b55\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div><p>After the war, many Jews who survived became active in <strong>the UJRE<\/strong>, which was very influential at the time.<\/p><\/div><div><p>The CCE, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museemrjmoi.com\/en\/commission-centrale-de-lenfance-cce\/\">the Commission Centrale de l&#8217;Enfance<\/a> under the UJRE, founded in 1945, took in Jewish orphans whose parents had been exterminated. The CCE would leave its mark on the postwar period <\/p><\/div><div><p>The history of Jewish Resistance is often overlooked or lost amid the broader memory of persecution. As time goes by, survivors\u2014with the support of their organizations\u2014are raising awareness of their role in the Resistance. <\/p><\/div><div><p>To date, they have all disappeared.<\/p><\/div><p>The commitment of the Resistance fighters from the Jewish section of the M.O.I. to the Liberation of France is now part of the work on history and remembrance undertaken by MRJ-M.O.I. through its online museum.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ba97ced e-flex e-con-boxed
