Jews with French nationality were not exempt from<a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16792\">administrative internment<\/a>. The law also applied in Algeria and throughout the French overseas territories.  <\/p><p dir=\"ltr\"><br><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Through this same law of June 2, 1941, published on June 14, the Vichy government further clarified its new definition of a Jew, regardless of that person\u2019s religion, whether converted or not, or whether they had no religion at all.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Indeed, according to the law, a person is considered a Jew\u2014whether male or female\u2014if \u201che or she, regardless of religious affiliation, has at least three grandparents of Jewish descent, or only two if his or her spouse also has two grandparents of Jewish descent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The entire legislative framework is based on the Nazi concept of the \u201cJewish race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><br><\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">At the same time, a second census targeted the Jews. Their daily lives were almost unbearable. They were registered, spied on, threatened, denounced, stripped of their possessions, and\u2014for many\u2014deprived of their jobs.  <\/p><p dir=\"ltr\"><br><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The insidious strategy of persecution\u2014known as \u201csegmentation\u201d\u2014which targets one group at a time, starting with foreign men, followed by women, the elderly, and children, perpetuates illusions and even leads some French Jews to believe they are protected.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\"><br><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">An autonomous Jewish Resistance center was established in the southern zone by the leadership of<a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16882\">\u201cSolidarit\u00e9,\u201d <\/a>which played a significant role in providing mutual aid from the very beginning. Jacques <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"17144\">Kaminski<\/a>, Sczmulek <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"17098\">Farber<\/a>, and Jacques <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"17106\">Ravine<\/a>, who had secretly crossed the demarcation line, were its leaders. They established contacts with Jews in the major cities of the south.  <\/p><p dir=\"ltr\"><br><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In mid-June 1941, they met with non-Jewish democratic organizations.
