This exemplary operation was carried out successfully thanks to the coordinated efforts led by Paul &nbsp;<a href=\"#\" data-note=\"17067\">Vergara<\/a>, pastor of the Oratoire du Louvre in Paris, Sophie <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"17049\">Schwartz<\/a> on behalf of the Union of Jewish Women, and Suzanne&nbsp;<a href=\"#\" data-note=\"17058\">Spaak<\/a> for the National Movement Against Racism (MNCR).<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16774\">Drancy<\/a>, sick Jewish patients\u2014both adults and children\u2014were transferred to<a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16695\">Rothschild Hospital<\/a> before their deportation. Healthcare workers organized escape routes for the hospitalized children. In retaliation, members of the hospital staff were deported by the <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16872\">Nazis<\/a>.  <\/p><p><br><\/p>\n<p>Rescue efforts are certainly few and far between, but throughout France, groups and individuals\u2014often anonymous\u2014are working to save lives.<\/p>\n<p>The support of the local population proved indispensable to the rescuers in evading arrest and hiding the children in the countryside.
