From January 22 to 24, 1943, <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16872\">Nazi<\/a> authorities and Ren\u00e9 Bousquet, Secretary General of the <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16840\">Vichy<\/a> police, organized a <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16947\">large-scale roundup<\/a> in Marseille. Approximately 8,000 people were arrested. 782 Jews were sent to the Compi\u00e8gne camp and then deported to the Sobibor extermination camp. None of them returned. A decision was made to destroy the \u201ccriminal district\u201d: the Germans dynamited and razed the northern sector of the Old Port.     <\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Other cities were also affected by the persecution of Jews (Aix-en-Provence, N\u00eemes, Carpentras, Avignon, Arles, Clermont-Ferrand, etc.).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> <\/span><\/p><p>The ongoing violence perpetrated by the occupying forces and the collaborationist Vichy government did not shake the Resistance\u2019s resolve. The prospect of victory and Liberation prompted the Communist Party, beginning in early 1943, to advocate a strategy of national unity. It called for the unification of all French people who opposed <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16911\">Hitler<\/a>. This unification took place within the <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16943\">National Front for the Struggle<\/a> for the Liberation and Independence of France.   <strong> <\/strong>conceived by the Party in 1941. Action against the Nazis and their collaborators intensified. <\/p><p> <\/p><p>The underground <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16865\">Jewish section<\/a> of the M.O.I. also set out to expand its influence and sought to unite with other Jewish organizations and all factions of the Resistance. The activities of the clandestine organization <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16882\">\u201cSolidarity\u201d <\/a>were gaining momentum in both the south and the north. <\/p><p>For the leaders of the Jewish section, it is necessary to rally, educate, and train Jews\u2014who are being hunted down from all sides\u2014for military or civilian combat. In the spring of 1943, the Jewish communist resistance from the North and South zones merged into a single organization.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>This was a decisive step:<a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16940\">the Union of Jews for Resistance and Mutual Aid<\/a> (UJRE) was founded. It was established by seven members of the Resistance: <span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Idel <\/span><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff; font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"#\" data-note=\"17203\">Korman<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">,<\/span> <strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> <\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Edouard <\/span><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff; font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"#\" data-note=\"17136\">Kowalsk<\/a><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff; font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/museemrjmoi.com\/node\/950\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">i<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">, Adam <\/span><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff; font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"#\" data-note=\"17152\">Rayski<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">, Sophie <\/span><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff; font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"#\" data-note=\"17049\">Schwartz<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> and Techka <\/span><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff; font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"#\" data-note=\"17223\">Tenenbaum<\/a><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">  <\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">represent the Paris office. Charles <\/span><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff; font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"#\" data-note=\"17075\">Lederman<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> and<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> <\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Jacques <\/span><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff; font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"#\" data-note=\"17106\">Ravine<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> are the representatives of the Southern leadership. <\/span> <\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">The UJRE will be operational as of May 1943.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> <\/span><\/p><p>At the same time, the Jewish section of the M.O.I. founded<a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16936\">the Union of Jewish Youth<\/a> (UJJ), led in Lyon by Jacques <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"17219\">Kott<\/a> and in Paris by Robert <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"17215\">Endewelt<\/a>. Young Jewish communists, who were already involved in rescuing Jewish children, joined the UJJ. The new organization aimed to create a broad coalition of democratic forces among Jewish youth throughout the country. In June 1943, the publication <em>*Jeune Combat* became <\/em>the UJJ\u2019s main organ.   <\/p><p> <\/p><p>Just like the UJJ, whose creation it helped foster, the UJRE is an underground organization dedicated to uniting for the country\u2019s liberation and improving the plight of the Jews. It would bring together all the clandestine resistance organizations stemming from the Jewish section, notably the Union of Jewish Women (<a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16826\">UFJ<\/a>) and the UJJ, which were joined by Jews active in the <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16711\">FTP-M.O.I.<\/a> <\/p><p> <\/p><p>Despite operating in secret, the UJRE mobilized its activists and, above all, recruited hundreds of new members. It also forged closer ties with other Jewish organizations such as the \u00c9claireurs Isra\u00e9lites de France (<a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16745\">EIF<\/a>) and the \u0152uvre de Secours aux Enfants ( <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16747\">OSE<\/a>). <\/p><p> <\/p><p>In the south (in Lyon, then in Toulouse, Marseille, and Grenoble), combat groups composed, among others, of young Jews from the UJJ took the name \u201cUJRE <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16932\">combat groups<\/a>,\u201d one-tenth of which would join the FTP-M.O.I.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>The UJRE\u2019s combat units train diligently and are gradually shifting from sabotage to military action. However, unlike the FTP-M.O.I., the members of these groups do not lead exclusively military lives.
