The <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16867\"> external Resistance<\/a> and the <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16740\">internal Resistance<\/a> <strong> <\/strong>are united.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>The Allied <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16993\">landings<\/a> took place on June 6, 1944. Numerous soldiers of various nationalities (American, Canadian, Australian, Norwegian, and others) headed for the beaches of Normandy to confront Hitler\u2019s army and gradually liberate the territory. The Free French Forces (FFL), affiliated with \u201cFree France\u201d since 1940, joined forces with the Allies. <span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Thanks to the efforts of the entire <\/span><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff; font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"#\" data-note=\"17038\">resistance movement<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">, German troop reinforcements heading for Normandy were held back.<\/span>  <\/p><p>On August 15, 1944, the landing in Provence took place. Colonial troops (particularly the African riflemen) played a major role in the operation. <\/p><p>The Nazis, sensing their end was near, relentlessly sought to spread terror. In Haute-Vienne, for example, four days after the Allied landings in Normandy, they massacred 642 residents of the village of<a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16990\">Oradour-sur-Glane<\/a>\u2014<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">men, women, and children\u2014in retaliation for Resistance activities in the region.<\/span> <\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> <\/span><\/p><p>In Lyon, Klaus Barbie<strong>, head <\/strong>of the Gestapo and a torturer responsible for the execution of numerous Resistance hostages, continued to send thousands of Jews\u2014adults and children alike\u2014to their certain deaths.<\/p><p><a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16724\">Convoys<\/a> of deportees continued to leave France for the extermination camps. There were approximately 79 convoys (some of which were not numbered) between 1942 and 1944. The conditions for the deportees on these trains<strong> were <\/strong>appalling<em>. <\/em>   <\/p><p><em> <\/em><\/p><p>In July 1944, a convoy departed from Toulouse that would later be nicknamed the <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16928\">\u201cghost train<\/a>.\u201d For nearly two months, this train transported about a thousand deportees to the <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16986\">Dachau<\/a> camp in Germany. When the few survivors of the \u201cghost train\u201d arrived in Dachau on August 28, it was the very same day that Bordeaux was liberated\u2026  <\/p><p>On August 17, 1944, with the liberation of Paris imminent, Alo\u00efs Brunner, the Nazi commander of the <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16774\">Drancy<\/a> internment camp, left France\u2026 with one final convoy.<\/p><p>By expanding and intensifying its actions, the Resistance continued in 1944 to destabilize the Occupying Forces through armed and civilian resistance. Information was once again disseminated through <a href=\"#\" data-note=\"16832\">leaflets<\/a>, a dangerous activity.
